My Photographic Journey

Like many people who make photography their livelihood and their passion, my journey in photography started in high school while working for the school newspaper. Equipped with my father's old 35 mm Leica camera with a 35 mm and a 135 mm lens, I took photos of Friday night football games, new cafeteria food, lively interactions on the quad, and occasional retirement announcements.

This experience logically led me to the world of publishing and an internship at Petersen’s PhotoGraphic magazine. As it turns out, being immersed in this dynamic environment provided me with a wonderful education, not only in the art of photography but also in valuable life lessons. Furthermore, I learned the essential skillset that all who work in publishing and photography must possess, knowing the crucial difference between blended scotch and single malt.

While completing my BA in Art at California State University, Northridge, I was offered a job as the university’s photo lab technician in the art department. This experience paved the way for a year of art studies in Florence, Italy. It was a transformative opportunity that deepened my understanding of art and photography, as well as my study of art history and the Renaissance's impact on photography.

Living abroad gave me the chance to find art and photography jobs in the Middle East. This ultimately opened doors for me to explore other parts of the world and photograph places I had only dreamed of. Many of the photos from this important time were taken on 35 mm film before the digital age, so some might show color and image fading. I apologize for this, but the quality is decent given the negatives are from the mid-1980s.

All these experiences eventually led me back to the world of magazine publishing, where I found myself working within various art departments and eventually received the privilege of becoming the owner and publisher of Digital Photographer, Pro Digital Imaging, and Camcorder & Computer Video magazines.

Today, I live in Los Angeles and my photographic assignments are for the most part related to youtube videos, home/real estate and architecture photography. But I do tend to gravitate towards landscape and nature photography for my own enjoyment.

The two pictures at right show me in Burma (circa 1986) and Palmyra, Syria (circa 1988).
